Italian peasants developed many recipes using their rations of grits (rustic polenta) after Columbus brought corn to Italy in the 15th century, and after the Civil War, Southerners relied on grits when little else was available to eat. Like most Southern Cuisine, grits recipes were developed by enslaved Black cooks. Today, grits are still central to Southern cuisine and are served all over the world.

We freshly grind our Certified Organic Heirloom Grits on a stone mill to retain its superior flavor and nutrition. Corn is also a good source of vitamin C and manganese. We never use GMO varieties, as is required to be Certified Organic.
