Red Fife was the baking and milling industries' standard of 'wheat' in Canada from 1860 to 1900. Red Fife wheat is a “landrace” crop. Called "folk seeds" or farmers' varieties, landraces have been feeding people since plant domestication started about 10,000 years ago. Landraces provide excellent insurance for subsistence farming populations; their long-term, real-life breeding in a myriad of conditions means that they have the genetic diversity to withstand a wide range of environmental challenges, so there is always something in the field at the end of the season.

Shagbark's Organic Red Fife Wheat is grown at Tom & Mary Klein and Sons Organic Farm. The Kleins never use GMO varieties, as is required to be Certified Organic.
